Why testing matters

Why do you need to perform leak tests?

Leakage from a radioactive source, other than one containing gaseous or volatile radioactive material, can deposit a radioactive film on the source surface or nearby objects. Periodic wipes of these surfaces, when analyzed with a sensitive instrument, can ordinarily detect traces of leakage long before significant amounts of radioactive material are released.
